Luxor the capital of the Egyptian Empire
Luxor once the capital of the Egyptian Empire—then called Thebes—today, Luxor is one of Egypt’s most popular destinations. The magnificent temples in and about the city are the result of successive pharaohs vying to outdo each other’s legacies. The sprawling complex of Karnak Temple, with its avenue of ram-headed sphinxes, and the Temple of Luxor are two of the most majestic architectural achievements of the ancient world. A short trip across the Nile brings you to the Valleys of the Kings and Queens. Hidden from view, beneath the sweeping sands and golden dunes, is an incredible labyrinth of corridors that served as the secret tombs of the pharaohs and their families for centuries. Colourful hieroglyphics and painted scenes—meant to assist the pharaoh on his journey into the afterlife—are still vividly visible on many of the chamber walls. Astounding in their clandestine and detailed construction, these fascinating tombs are among Egypt’s most memorable monuments.
