Visit & Explore Abu Sembel
The great Pharaoh Ramses II left as his legacy two of the most tremendous monuments constructed in the ancient world—the Great and Small Temples of Abu Simbel. Massive figures of Ramses decorate the façade of the Great Temple, which, along with the Small Temple, was at one time in danger of being lost forever to the rising waters of Lake Nasser. In an engineering feat almost as incredible as the temples themselves, the structures were cut into 2,000 pieces and moved, slab by slab, to a site 700 feet away from, and over 200 feet higher than, the original location. Flawlessly reconstructed, the temples stand today as a dual testimony to human ingenuity.
