  The large granite rocks and islands that rise from the Nile’s gentle currents near Aswan are said to resemble elephants bathing in the water. Appropriately, the largest of these is named Elephantine Island and is the location of several Nubian villages where welcoming residents maintain traditional customs and languages. Just to the west,Kitchener’s Island is a paradise of plant and floral life. Of course, Aswan has its fair share of ruins, among them the Temple of Philae. Dedicated to Isis, the goddess of healing and fertility, this beautiful complex is poised on the island of Agilkia, just ahead of the Nile River’s first of six cataracts.

The Giza Pyramids, built to endure an eternity, have done just that. The monumental tombs are relics of Egypt's Old Kingdom era and were constructed some 4,500 years ago.
